Working Along from Around the Globe

In 2023, Siemens Energy started a new initiative for open innovation. Faced with numerous challenges, the company sought contact with startups to drive innovative change. Under the leadership of Jaydeep Naha, General Manager Digital Solutions and Project Execution, and Eva Harasewycz, Team Lead Venture Clienting at Siemens Energy Ventures, they set out to find suitable partners. This search led them to HM.prototype.club 2023, where the collaboration with Infinite Foundry began.

At the HM.prototype.club 2023, Siemens Energy posed a unique challenge in the field of offline asset localization. The goal was to develop an offline AR navigation app that could act as a digital brain for robots, enabling them to navigate autonomously without an internet connection.

How It All Started

Jaydeep shares his insights on what initially motivated Siemens Energy to participate in the HM.prototype.club and present the offline asset localization challenge. One of the key motivations was the decision between inhouse development and purchasing solutions. Jaydeep explains, „One of the challenges was to decide between making and buying. For the first time, we thought, why not look at startups and see how they can help us either integrate into the ecosystem or do it better and faster than we do. This led to the idea of a competition.“

Infinite Foundry stood out with their innovative 3D digital platform. Jaydeep notes, „Infinite Foundry was one of the three startups that made it to the final. They were selected as the winner and rewarded not only with a cash prize but also with an actual project.“ Their solution included a precise 3D digital twin of the power plant, enabling robots to navigate autonomously.

The Collaboration Process with prototype.club

The collaboration began with a virtual kickoff, where participants were provided with resources without confidential information. “We had a virtual kickoff and provided them with resources. After a few weeks, we had an intervention to address any questions,“ Jaydeep describes. Key milestones included the initial kickoff, the hands-on phase with provided data, regular feedback sessions, and the final presentations at HANNOVER MESSE.

„The biggest challenge was developing a solution that worked without an internet connection. This was addressed through the innovative use of AR and AI technologies and close collaboration between Siemens Energy and Infinite Foundry. The use of AR and AI was crucial, and the close collaboration helped address challenges.“

Outcomes and Future Plans

Nearly a year since Infinite Foundry was rewarded with the follow-up, the collaboration has proven highly successful.

The collaboration with Infinite Foundry is continuing, and we are looking at how to scale the solution they have built for us“

Siemens Energy plans to continue and potentially expand the collaboration with Infinite Foundry.

Participation Makes the Dream Work

The collaboration with Infinite Foundry showcases the immense value of partnering with startups through the prototype.club platform. „It’s more than just ideation challenges; it’s about hands-on testing and finding the best talent for the best problems. This format is highly valuable and cost-effective.“

Large corporations can benefit from the fresh perspectives, innovative solutions, and agile development processes that startups bring. „We clearly see that there is so much value in innovating in a different way and finding the best talent for the best problems,“ Jaydeep notes.
